What free loft insulation grants are available?

To reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty, the Government launched the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme. Founded in 2013, the scheme requires energy suppliers to provide funding for energy-saving solutions. This includes:

  • Green heating systems (including air-source heat pumps)
  • Upgrading existing boilers
  • Wall insulation (cavity wall insulation and solid wall insulation)
  • And of course, free loft insulation

The government estimates that almost £20 billion has been cut from lifetime energy bills due to installations through the ECO scheme in the last decade. The scheme has had various iterations over the years, such as ECO, ECO1, ECO2 and ECO3. Its latest stage, ECO4, targets low-income households that aren’t energy efficient.

Am I eligible for a loft insulation grant?

Eligibility for a loft insulation grant through the ECO4 scheme depends on two key factors:

  1. 1

Your property’s Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating

  2. 2

The end-user’s receipt of certain benefits

EPC requirements explained

An energy performance certificate is required for any property that’s built, sold or rented in the UK. It gives the property an energy efficiency rating from a scale of A to G with information about energy use, energy costs and potential improvements.

To target the most inefficient households, the ECO4 scheme is only available for properties rated E, F or G. These are the properties where heating costs are likely to be highest. You can find your property’s EPC through the Government website.

Benefits requirements

To be eligible for ECO4 funding, you (or your tenant) must be a member of the Help to Heat Group. Membership requires a person to receive one or more of the following income-based benefits:

  • Income based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
  • Income related Employment & Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income Support (IS)
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit (PCGC)
  • Working Tax Credit (WTC)
  • Child Tax Credit (CTC)
  • Universal Credit (UC)
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension Credit Savings Credit (PCSC)
  • Child Benefit (within certain income caps)

More details on these qualifying benefits can be found through Ofgem. Or you can simply apply online with Zing Energy to see if you’re eligible. It only takes a few minutes to apply and it’s completely free.

Is loft insulation right for your home?

Typically, a large proportion of heat generated within homes escapes via the roof, with heat rising and finding an escape route. For this reason, roof insulation is one of the best methods to become truly energy efficient, reducing your energy bills for years to come. Zing has a series of experts who can carry out this work, keeping your home cosy and lowering your heating bills.

Benefits of loft insulation:

  • Prevent heat loss: An uninsulated home loses up to 25% heat loss through the roof, which can be easily mitigated by installing loft insulation, leaving you with a much warmer and cosier home.
  • Noise reduction: Installing loft insulation creates a sound barrier which is particularly good for reducing noise permeating from the top of the roof, often caused by birds and other animals.
  • Increase green credentials: With loft insulation resulting in a reduction in energy consumption, your carbon footprint will be significantly reduced, and your home will be more environmentally friendly.
  • Reduce stress on boiler: Another positive from having a fully insulated loft space is that your boiler will not have to work so hard to keep a consistent room temperature in your home, helping to prolong your boiler’s lifespan.
  • Lower energy bills: The Energy Saving Trust estimates that households could save as much as £415 per year by installing loft insulation, and with rising heating bills, it’s now as important as ever to become more energy aware.
  • Fast installation: Compared to other energy-saving measures, loft insulation is both fast and non-disruptive. Your free insulation can be fitted in a matter of hours without any impact on the usability of your loft.
  • Access to other grants: Many grants for energy efficiency measures require lofts to be insulated before you can apply. With loft insulation in place, you could be eligible for other home improvement funding.

Loft Insulation Grant FAQs

Installing roof insulation is relatively straightforward and many householders choose to have a go at it themselves. However, the benefits of using the services of an approved local installer not only include using our highly skilled and accredited technicians, but our installs also come with a workmanship warranty, giving you peace of mind.

As part of the UK’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions and therefore make our country greener and more energy efficient, the Government have obligated the largest energy companies in the UK to offer energy saving grants via the Energy Company Obligation or ‘ECO Scheme’. This scheme provides funding for low-income households to install a variety of energy saving measures, with Loft Insulation being one of these measures.

The lifespan of loft insulation can vary depending on the type of insulation material used and the quality of installation. In general, most loft insulation materials have a relatively long lifespan, often exceeding 20 years or more. However, factors such as exposure to moisture, pests and rodents and physical damage can have an impact on energy efficiency and the overall lifespan of the product and installation. Regular inspections of your loft insulation can help identify any issues that may arise, allowing you to address them promptly and ensure the continued effectiveness of the insulation.

Loft insulation may reduce your available storage space, as it typically requires covering the loft floor with insulation. However, solutions like raised loft platforms can be installed to create storage space above the insulation. It is important to leave an air gap between any boarding, otherwise you run the risk of moisture build-up and damp forming.

Installing loft insulation provides an effective way to combat rising heat-loss, especially in colder temperatures. Building regulations recommend a minimum of 270mm thickness for loft insulation, but insulating above this amount can provide further savings on your energy bills. Our energy efficiency improvements experts at Zing Energy can answer any loft installation queries you may have.

Securing funding through the ECO scheme typically takes around a month. This involves an initial eligibility check, a home survey and wait times for approval from Ofgem. Rest assured, we’ll keep you in the loop with your application throughout the grant process.

As for fitting your roof insulation, our highly skilled team can complete the job in a matter of hours – though it naturally depends on the size of your property.

The vast majority of applications for loft insulation are approved so long as they meet the criteria for income and energy performance. That’s because the ECO4 scheme prioritises loft insulation above improvements to heating systems. In other words, they want you to insulate your loft as a first port of call along with other energy efficiency measures like solid wall insulation.

The initial cost of loft insulation varies depending on the size of your property and roof space, along with type of insulation used. Estimates range from as little as £100 to upwards of £1,000, though it can ‘pay for itself’ through savings on your heating bills. With loft insulation grants, you won’t need to cover this cost. It will be covered by your energy supplier as part of the ECO scheme.

The ECO scheme is an obligation for all energy companies with more than 150,000 customers. That includes the main energy suppliers, such as E.ON, EDF, British Gas, Octopus Energy, OVO Energy, Shell Energy, The Co-operative Energy, Utilita Energy, E, Ecotricity, ESB Energy, Outfox The Market, Scottish Power, SO Energy and The Utility Warehouse.
