What free storage heater grants are available?

Available across England and Wales, government grants to replace storage heaters 2022 can be a clever way to improve the efficiency of your home, slash heating bills and reduce your carbon footprint.

Electric storage heaters grants are available as part of the Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) scheme, a government initiative launched in 2013. It calls on energy suppliers to provide funding for energy-saving solutions designed to reduce nationwide carbon emissions and address fuel poverty.

This includes:

  • Installation of green heating systems, such as air source heat pumps
  • Boiler upgrades and repairs
  • Wall and loft insulation
  • Electric storage heater grants, including storage heater grants for pensioners

Since launching the ECO scheme, the government estimates almost £20 billion has been cut from lifetime energy bills. The enormous success has promoted the government to launch several versions of the scheme over the past decade, including ECO, ECO1, ECO2 and ECO3. The latest stage, ECO4, targets low-income households with poor energy efficiency ratings.

Am I eligible for an electric storage heater grant?

Eligibility for electric storage heater grants through the ECO4 scheme depends on two key factors:

  1. 1

The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating assigned to the property

  2. 2

The unique circumstances of the end-user

Understanding EPC requirements

In the UK, Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) are used to measure the energy efficiency of a property. Ratings are assigned on a scale from A to G. To qualify for an ECO4 electric storage heater grant, applicants typically need to fall into the E, F or G categories, which indicate low energy efficiency.

Grant value is influenced by EPC rating, with higher grants typically associated with lower-rated properties and higher heating costs. The Government website is a good resource to find the EPC rating of your property. Alternatively, you can simply apply online with Zing Energy to find out more about eligibility.

Homes classified under Band D are anticipated to become eligible at a later stage in the program. This is because regulations currently limit energy companies to allocate only 15% of funding to properties with D ratings.

Benefits requirements

Property owners or tenants must be registered with the Help to Heat Group to be eligible for ECO4 funding. The income-based benefits listed below are considered when assessing membership:

  • Income based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
  • Income related Employment & Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income Support (IS)
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit (PCGC)
  • Working Tax Credit (WTC)
  • Child Tax Credit (CTC)
  • Universal Credit (UC)
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension Credit Savings Credit (PCSC)
  • Child Benefit (within certain income caps)

Want to know more about eligibility for electric storage heater grants? Visit Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) to learn more about qualifying benefits and membership to the Help to Heat Group. Alternatively, apply online with Zing Energy to assess your eligibility. It only takes a few minutes and is completely free.

Is an electric storage heater right for your home?

If your home falls into a low EPC band and you meet eligibility requirements, electric storage heaters could be a worthwhile upgrade.

Benefits of electric storage heaters:

  • Greater energy efficiency: Unlike traditional central heating systems, new electric storage heaters offer a more flexible and energy-efficient solution for heating your home. Modern electric storage heaters help to retain heat for longer periods, resulting in reduced energy wastage.
  • Reduced energy bills: By using off-peak electricity tariffs, electric storage heaters can help you take advantage of cheaper electricity rates during low-demand times, helping to lower your heating bills.
  • Advanced features: New electric heaters include advanced controls and programmable features, allowing you to set specific heating schedules and temperatures for different times of the day.
  • Improved safety features: Newer electric storage heaters include better technology and modern components, which provide you with enhanced safety features for your home.
  • Maximum control: Modern electric heaters include accurate thermostats which provide you with greater control over how much energy you use, plus how you distribute heat into each room in your home.
  • Fast installation: Installing electric storage heaters can be a fast and non-disruptive way to improve the energy efficiency of your home.

Electric storage heaters FAQs

Electric storage heaters, also called night storage heaters, are made with heat-retaining clay bricks that accumulate and store heat during the night. This stored heat is then released as needed during the daytime. Some energy providers offer substantial discounts on electricity usage during the night, offering residents the opportunity to take advantage of reduced power demand.

Unlike traditional radiators, electric storage heaters only require mains electricity for operation. This makes them more versatile and suitable for various installations without the need for complex pipework. Electric storage heaters are also low maintenance as they lack moving parts or liquids. This gives them a longer lifespan than conventional heating methods.

Modern storage heaters have evolved significantly over recent years, with slimline designs that make them both efficient and aesthetically pleasing. This makes them suitable for detached homes as well as compact spaces.

Modern storage heaters take advantage of cheaper tariffs by charging at night and storing warmth throughout the day, resulting in greater efficiency and lower running costs.

The size and number of heaters required depend on a variety of factors, including the size of property. Zing Energy will carry out a free, no obligation survey to establish your energy system requirements.

As part of the ECO scheme, fan assisted storage heaters can be installed. These heaters use overnight energy storage but differ from traditional models by using a silent fan to extract cool air from the room. A thermostat-controlled vent is then used to convert this cool air into hot air.

Combination convector electric storage heaters, also eligible for installation under the ECO scheme, operate on the same principle. They include an additional convector heater which provides an alternative heat source or boost to the existing available energy.

‘Economy 7’ tariffs are where utility companies provide cheaper electricity at off-peak times, i.e. during the 7 hours of nighttime when energy is typically less in demand. Economy 7 storage heaters grants require a specialised meter that tracks when energy has been used

Installing a Solar PV system (solar panels) combined with energy efficient storage heaters is a great way to heat your home, as the electricity generated from the panels will charge your storage heaters during the day, so you still have warmth in the evening.

Under the ECO4 scheme, low-income households in receipt of certain benefits may be entitled to a grant which could cover the cost of installing your new storage heater. Simply click on the Apply button to see if you qualify.

Government grants for storage heaters can cover up to 100% of the cost, contingent on both the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of the property and the specific circumstances of the household.
