What is the Great British Insulation Scheme?
The Great British Insulation Scheme is a nationwide initiative that has been designed to tackle energy inefficiency across the UK. Aiming to reduce bills and carbon emissions, its overriding goal is to improve overall living conditions by assisting in the installation of better insulation.
In short, GBIS offers a financial incentive to support homeowners, landlords and tenants to upgrade their properties. This includes:
- Loft insulation
- Cavity wall insulation
- Solid wall insulation
- Solid floor insulation
- Park home insulation
- Room in roof insulation
- Underfloor insulation
The hope is that by enhancing insulation levels, homes will retain more heat during the colder months of the year. This means there will be less reliance on heating and cooling systems nationwide.
GBIS is widely accessible, providing various forms of assistance, such as:
- Grants
- Subsidies
- Low-interest loans
The scheme is also linked with many local authorities, energy companies and accredited installers to ensure a smooth implementation of new insulation projects
Am I eligible for the Great British Insulation Scheme?
Before continuing with the application process, it’s important to understand if you are eligible for the benefits offered by the Great British Insulation Scheme. Here is a short breakdown of the eligibility criteria and requirements:

‘GBIS’ requirements explained
Residency status: GBIS extends its benefits to homeowners, landlords and tenants who own or occupy residential properties in the United Kingdom. It covers houses, flats and other eligible dwellings – see below.
Property type: The scheme covers a wide range of property types. Keep in mind that your eligibility may vary depending on the construction type and age of your property. The property types covered include:
- Detached houses
- Semi-detached houses
- Terraced houses
- Flats
- Bungalows
Energy efficiency: To qualify for incentives and funding under GBIS, your property will usually have to meet minimum energy efficiency standards.
Generally, you are likely to get support if your home has an energy performance certificate of D to G. Energy performance certificates (EPC) are issued depending on many factors within your home that contribute to overall energy performance. You can find out your property’s EPC by using the Government website.
Accredited installation: In many cases, your participation in GBIS requires the involvement of an accredited installer or contractor. These will need to meet certain quality and certification requirements. Working with a set of approved professionals means that any installation will adhere to industry standards.
Financial circumstances: While GBIS is a scheme designed to make insulation affordable for all – some financial assistance may be means-tested. This means that they are targeted toward specific demographics such as low-income households.
GBIS is typically available for council tax bands from A-D in England. In Scotland and Wales, it’s A-E.
When you apply
When applying you will need some simple details to check if you are eligible for support under this scheme. You’ll need to provide:
- Your total household income
- Your email address and phone number
- The types of benefits that you or anyone living in the property receive
Does your home need new insulation?
Working out whether your home needs new insulation is an important starting point. We’re going to outline some tell-tale signs that your home may benefit from insulation upgrades.
High energy bills: If you notice a significant increase in your heating bills, this is a sign that your home is losing heat during the colder months of the year.
Uneven temperatures: Are certain rooms in your home noticeably colder or warmer than others? This is an indication that you have inadequate insulation. Proper insulation will help to maintain a consistent temperature throughout your home.
Condensation and moisture: Another obvious sign of inefficient insulation is excessive condensation. This might be on your windows, walls or ceilings. It can lead to excessive moisture buildup which can create mould growth.
Old insulation: You might already know that your insulation is out of date. Insulation can become damaged or deteriorate over time. This will reduce the materials’ ability to retain heat over time.
Ice dams: During the coldest months of the year, ice dams are a possibility. These can form along the eaves of your roof during winter and are a sign of poor attic insulation.
The benefits of modern insulation methods
Here are some of the benefits of modern insulation materials and techniques. Adding these to your home can help save you money and make your home much more comfortable, especially during periods of extreme weather.
- Improved energy efficiency: This one goes without saying! Modern insulation materials, like spray foam insulation, rigid foam boards or reflective barriers, will each help to provide thermal resistance. This will reduce energy consumption for both heating and cooling. In short – you’ll end up with much lower utility bills.
- Air quality: Many modern insulation materials are designed to be non-toxic and resistant to mould, mildew or pests. They achieve this by sealing air leaks and preventing moisture buildup.
- Noise reduction: Outside of temperature control, many insulation materials can help to reduce noise throughout your home. Many modern insulation materials can absorb sound, helping to create a more peaceful indoor environment.
- Durability: Modern insulation materials are designed to last. With a scheme like GBIS, you’ll find that you will get long-lasting performance and protection for your property.
