What external wall insulation grants are available?
Government grants for external wall insulation can help households living with fuel-poverty to afford insulation. The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme was founded in 2013. To combat fuel-poverty, the ECO grant scheme requires energy companies and energy suppliers to fund energy-efficiency solutions for low income households. These solutions include:
- Energy-efficient energy systems, such as biomass boilers
- Loft insulation
- Boiler repairs and upgrades
- Wall insulation, including both cavity wall insulation and solid wall insulation
According to government estimates, over the past decade, almost £20 billion has been saved from lifetime energy bills through this scheme. In its current iteration, the ECO4 grant for external wall insulation and other eco-friendly solutions is applicable from 1 April 2022 until 31 March 2026.
Am I eligible for an external wall insulation grant?
Two key criteria affect whether you’ll qualify for an external wall insulation grant in 2024. These are:
-
1
The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of your property
-
2
The benefits you or your tenant are in receipt of
EPC requirements
All properties within the UK require an EPC certificate. That applies whether they’re newly built, sold or rented. This certificate gives an energy efficiency rating for the property, on a scale from A to G. Additional information is also provided, including energy costs and potential eco-friendly improvements.
The ECO4 grant for external wall insulation is specifically targeted at households with low incomes in highly inefficient properties. In order to be eligible, your property must have an energy rating of E, F or G. These are the least energy efficient properties with the highest energy costs. Not sure what your EPC rating is? You can find your home’s energy efficiency certificate on the government website.
Benefits requirements
To meet the personal criteria, a household must be considered part of the “Help to Heat” group. This means you or your tenant will need to be in receipt of certain benefits. These include:
- Income-based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
- Income-related Employment & Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income Support (IS)
- Pension Credit Guarantee Credit (PCGC)
- Working Tax Credit (WTC)
- Child Tax Credit (CTC)
- Universal Credit (UC)
- Housing Benefit
- Pension Credit Savings Credit (PCSC)
- Child Benefit (within some income caps)
If you’d like to know more about the qualifying benefits, you can read more on the Ofgem website. Alternatively, apply online with Zing Energy. It’s quick, no-cost and hassle-free.
Is external wall insulation right for your home?
Does your home experience significant heat loss through uninsulated external walls? If so, it might be time to give your home a facelift with external wall insulation. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but the watertight, insulated finish will keep your home damp-proof and thermally efficient. There are plenty of other benefits to consider too…
Benefits of external wall insulation
- Reduced carbon footprint: By reducing the amount of energy needed to heat your home, external wall insulation can help to lower your carbon emissions. That makes your home more sustainable and carbon efficient.
- Save money: By improving your home’s insulation, you’ll need less energy to heat your home, leading to significant savings on your energy bills.
- Improved comfort: External wall insulation helps to maintain a stable and comfortable indoor temperature by reducing drafts and cold spots. This creates a pleasant living environment all year round.
- Enhanced appearance: Installing external wall insulation can transform the appearance of outer walls of your home by providing a brand-new, modern finish, enhancing the overall look of your property.
- Increased property value: With improved energy-efficiency and aesthetics, external wall insulated properties can be more appealing to homebuyers, potentially increasing the value of your home.
- All-weather protection: This type of an insulation material provides a protective layer for the building’s walls, shielding them from the effects of weather and moisture, reducing maintenance costs and extending the building’s lifespan.
- Enhanced sound resistance: External wall insulation not only improves thermal and energy efficiency measures but also adds a layer of sound resistance, helping to reduce external noise for a more peaceful home environment.

External Wall Insulation FAQs
This type of internal solid wall insulation is extremely effective in improving thermal performance, particularly for homes which don’t have cavity walls. This increase in thermal performance leads to lower energy and heating bills, reduced carbon emissions, improved thermal comfort, better moisture control and, potentially, an increase in the property’s value.
The steps involved in the installation of external wall insulation include:
- Preparation of the existing surface: This involves cleaning the surface to remove dirt and ensure any cracks and defects in the wall are repaired for a smooth substrate.
- Fixing of insulation boards: For the first layer of external wall insulation, insulation boards are attached to the external wall. These are typically made of compressed polystyrene and are attached to the wall using adhesives and mechanical fixings.
- Reinforcement and mesh installation: Once the insulation boards are in place, a reinforcing mesh is embedded into a base coat of adhesive or render. This mesh provides structural stability to solid walls and the insulation system, distributing loads and preventing cracks from forming.
- Application of base coats: On top of the first insulation material and mesh, multiple base coat layers are applied, including plaster and render. This levels the surface, creating a stable base for the final coat.
- Finish coat application: The last stage of the installation process determines the final appearance of the insulated wall. The finish coat comes in a variety of decorative colours, which usually includes acrylic renders, brick slips or decorative cladding.
As with other forms of thermal insulation, such as cavity wall insulation, the amount of money you can save is dependent on a variety of factors. These include the size of the property, the type of heating source you use and even which part of the country you live in. According to the Energy Saving Trust, typically, a detached house could save up to £620 per annum on heating costs, whereas a mid-terrace house could save £210 per annum.
The time it takes to install external wall insulation varies from project to project, with the size of the property, site access and the weather being important factors. On average, it can take up to 2 weeks to complete external wall insulation for a typical property. Zing Energy can survey your property and provide you with a clear idea of the time-frames you can expect. Then, once agreed, our highly skilled installation technicians will carry out the installation.
The cost of installing external wall insulation can vary depending on factors such as the size of your property and the type of finish required. The best way to get an accurate quote is to contact our team of experienced energy saving experts. They can assess your personal circumstances to see if you qualify for external insulation government grants, which could cover the installation costs. You can find out more about the government’s eco scheme for external wall insulation on the Ofgem website.
To qualify for government insulation grants for external cladding, there are some set criteria you’ll need to meet. Grants for free external wall insulation are aimed at the least-efficient homes, so you’ll need to ensure your property has a poor energy rating of either E, F or G. External insulation cladding grants also have personal criteria, so that funding is sent to households living with fuel-poverty. You or your tenant will need to be in receipt of certain benefits to qualify. If you’re unsure about whether you meet the criteria for external wall cladding grants, you can still apply with us online. We’ll get back to you and let you know if you qualify for a grant.
Yes, we can also help with grants for air source heat pumps, boiler upgrades, electric storage heaters, first time central heating, solar battery storage, solar PV, thermal insulation, cavity wall insulation, external wall insulation, flat roof insulation, internal wall insulation, loft insulation and room in roof insulation.
