What room in roof insulation grants are available?
We work with three different government grant schemes, all of which can help with room in roof insulation:
- ECO4, which is the fourth iteration of the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme
- The Home Upgrade Grant scheme
- Local Authority Flex, which extends the ECO4 scheme
These schemes offer funding for a variety of energy efficiency home improvements, helping to enhance your living spaces.
Am I eligible for a room in roof insulation grant?
Each scheme involves a different set of criteria for eligibility. Take a look at the details below or alternatively just start with our free application, and we’ll figure out your eligibility for you.
-
1
1. Your property must have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of E, F or G.
-
2
2. At least one of the property’s residents needs to be in the Help to Heat benefits group.
Help to Heat benefits group includes:
- Income based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
- Income related Employment & Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income Support (IS)
- Pension Credit Guarantee Credit (PCGC)
- Working Tax Credit (WTC)
- Child Tax Credit (CTC)
- Universal Credit (UC)
- Housing Benefit
- Pension Credit Savings Credit (PCSC)
- Child Benefit (within income caps)
Not sure about your benefits? You can check more details in Ofgem’s FAQs about benefits and eligibility. Alternatively, complete a free application and just let us take care of it.
Home Upgrade Grant
Unlike the ECO4 scheme, the Home Upgrade Grant isn’t connected with benefits received. Instead, the criteria are these:
Local Authority Flex
The Local Authority Flex scheme lets local authorities extend ECO4 eligibility to people who wouldn’t qualify just based on their benefits. That means each authority’s requirements are different, but they may include:
- Household income
- Proportion of energy bills to income
- Medical conditions of residents in the household
What are EPC requirements?
Whenever a property is rented or sold, the person receiving the property must be given an EPC. The certificate gives an energy efficiency rating for the property, ranging from A, the best rating, to G, the least efficient rating. The certificate also goes into some details about the potential costs of energy and how the property could be made more energy efficient.
If you’d like to know what your property’s energy efficiency rating is, you can find your EPC via a government website.

Benefits of room in roof insulation
- Create a habitable space: Installing room in roof insulation can help to transform your loft space into a cosy habitable loft room, where this new layer of insulation can help to stabilise the temperature.
- Increase property value: If you are thinking of selling your property, creating an additional comfortable living space in loft or attic rooms in your home could be appealing to potential buyers, and could help your property stand out from the rest.
- Increased comfort: Insulation installed properly can have a positive impact on living conditions by keeping the room cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, creating a more comfortable home environment.
- Sustainable materials: Modern insulation products are now available with environmentally friendly options, such as recycled materials and natural fibres, which may align with your sustainability goals.
- Energy savings: As heat rises it escapes through uninsulated areas of the property, resulting in significant energy wastage. Although up to 25% of heat is lost this way, if you install room in roof insulation, you can stop this from happening.

Room in Roof Insulation Grant FAQs
Room in roof insulation is ideal for properties with existing attic rooms or living spaces built within the loft space, including those with stud walls. With attic rooms insulated, it is an effective way to improve the energy efficiency of a property by reducing heat loss and maintaining a comfortable temperature. This is achieved by installing rigid insulation boards or insulating material in batts to the walls and the sloping parts of the ceiling, followed by plasterboard which is then plastered over.
When a property is uninsulated, the rising heat will escape via the loft space, resulting in fluctuating temperatures in loft rooms during warm and cold weather. This can be uncomfortable as the heat generated within the home may escape, making it feel either too hot or too cold. Installing insulation acts as an insulating blanket, retaining the heat and preventing it from escaping through the roof, while also protecting the habitable space from external cold.
