A guide to renewable energy sources

21st August 2020

With a growing awareness of climate change, we are all looking at how we can reduce carbon emissions. One of the best places to start is the home and ensuring we all maximise energy efficiency through using renewable energy sources. Thanks to a new range of green Government grants, these measures are becoming more viable than ever. This means householders can install carbon saving measures at a fraction of the normal price.

For Zing Energy, renewable energy is in our DNA as we have been pioneering it since we formed five years ago. So what are the different renewable energy measures and the questions you need to ask? Check out our new guide to renewable energy sources.

WHAT IS RENEWABLE ENERGY?

Renewable energy is generated from natural resources, which are naturally replaced. These range from sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and also geothermal heat, derived within the sub-surface of the earth. Unlike fossil fuels, they do not contribute to carbon emissions.

WHY RENEWABLES?

Carbon emissions are universally acknowledged to be a massive contributor to climate change. Renewable energy is the solution to the challenge of reducing your emissions, while still providing the energy you need to live your life. As well as transforming your energy consumption, renewable energy will also save you money and even add value to your property.

Solar panels

Solar PV (Photovoltaic) uses solar radiation and converts this into electricity in homes. This can power your appliances and lighting. It is a myth that solar panels require direct sunlight in order to work. In fact they can still generate some electricity on a cloudy day. The good news is panels are quick and easy to fit. Trusted contractors like Zing Energy can get them fitted in just a couple of hours.

Ground Source Heat Pumps

Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) use pipes buried in your garden to produce heat from the ground. They are both eco-friendly and energy efficient, drawing heat created from the ground created by the sun. This heat can heat your home via radiators, underfloor, warm air heating systems and hot water.

Air Source Heat Pumps

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP’s) extract heat from the outside and deliver it to your property via a network of fans. Easy to install and with no requirement for a garden, they can even generate heat when the mercury dips below -10° C. In the same way as a fridge extracts heat from its inside, ASHP’s extract heat from the outside.

Thermodynamic panels

This new technology is based on heat exchange. Working in a way similar to air source heat pumps, heat from the air is collected through a special fluid. With the help of a compressor this then heats up the tank for domestic hot water. It then provides hot water all year round.

Grant funding

The Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) is a separate Government initiative and domestic energy efficiency programme applying to the whole of the UK. It was established to provide low-income households with financial support towards the installation of energy efficiency measures. This scheme also including renewable energy measures.
