WHAT CAVITY WALL INSULATION GRANTS ARE AVAILABLE?

Government grants for cavity wall insulation are covered by the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme. This scheme was founded in 2013 to help struggling households to warm their homes, whilst also tackling the climate crisis. It requires energy suppliers to fund energy-efficient solutions for vulnerable households, including:

Many low-income households have received funding for energy-saving solutions through the ECO scheme. In fact, government estimates place the lifetime energy bill savings over the past decade at almost £20 billion. Its current iteration, the ECO4 order is applicable to solutions installed from 1 April 2022 until 31 March 2026.

DO I MEET THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR A CAVITY WALL INSULATION GRANT?

To qualify for a cavity insulation grant, you need to meet TWO KEY CRITERIA. These relate to:

  1. 1

THE PROPERTY’S ENERGY PERFORMANCE CERTIFICATE (EPC) RATING

  2. 2

THE BENEFITS ACCESSED BY THE END-USER (WHETHER THAT’S YOU OR YOUR TENANT)

WHAT ARE THE EPC REQUIREMENTS?

Any property that is built, sold or rented within the UK needs to have an EPC certificate. This certificate rates the building’s energy efficiency, which scales from A to G. It also gives additional information about energy use, costs and suggested improvements.

As the ECO4 scheme is aimed at households struggling with fuel-poverty, your property will need to have an energy rating of E, F or G to be eligible. That’s because these are the most cost-inefficient properties. If you need to find your EPC, you can access it on the Government website.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS REQUIREMENTS?

To meet the criteria for the ECO4 scheme, you (or your tenant) will need to be considered part of the “Help to Heat” group. This refers to households who are in receipt of one or more income-based benefits, including:

  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment & Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income Support (IS)
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit (PCGC)
  • Working Tax Credit (WTC)
  • Child Tax Credit (CTC)
  • Universal Credit (UC)
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension Credit Savings Credit (PCSC)
  • Child Benefit (within some income caps)

If you need further information on the benefits criteria, you can read more on the Ofgem website. Alternatively, you can follow Zing Energy’s quick and easy online application process. It’s a free and a simple way to find out if you’re eligible.

IS CAVITY WALL INSULATION RIGHT FOR YOUR HOME?

One hassle-free option for insulating your property is cavity wall insulation. But is it right for you and your home? If you’re looking for an energy solution grant, wall insulation is a great choice. That’s because it comes with a huge array of benefits. These include…

BENEFITS OF CAVITY WALL INSULATION:

  • IMPROVED ENERGY EFFICIENCY: cavity wall insulation reduces heat loss through the walls, helping to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature, which can lead to lower energy bills and lower energy consumption.
  • QUICK INSTALLATION: cavity wall insulation can often be installed relatively quickly and with minimal disruption to your home. The process typically involves drilling small holes in the exterior walls and injecting the insulation material, which is then sealed.
  • CONDENSATION PREVENTION: insulated walls are less prone to condensation issues, which can lead to the appearance of mould. Cavity wall insulation helps to maintain a drier and healthier indoor environment.
  • SOUND INSULATION: While primarily designed for thermal insulation, cavity wall insulation can also provide some level of soundproofing, reducing the transmission of noise from the outside or between rooms.
  • INCREASED THERMAL COMFORT: insulated walls help maintain a more consistent indoor temperature, reducing cold spots and drafts. This results in improved thermal comfort and a more pleasant living environment.

CAVITY WALL INSULATION GRANT FAQS

Cavity wall insulation is not suitable for all property types. If your home is made with solid walls, which don’t have a cavity, or the condition of the walls are in poor condition, including cracks in the external finish, or existing dampness, then this type of insulation may not be suitable. However, if your home was built after the 1930, there’s a good chance it will have cavity walls and will therefore be suitable. To find out more, fill in our contact form and one of our surveyors can arrange a survey at your home.

Cavity wall insulation is installed by drilling 22mm holes at intervals of approximately every 1 metre on the outside walls of your home. Insulation material is then injected into the cavity through these holes, which are then sealed up by using cement. The insulation material used is usually polystyrene bead, which provides excellent thermal benefits for your property, helping you stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

If you live in a semi-detached property, and your neighbour does not want cavity wall insulation, or their property is not suitable for the insulation, the insulation technician will insert a cavity barrier brush into the cavity wall, which helps prevent the passage of insulation beads between the attached properties. The barrier brush also prevents the movement of any debris, dirt, or even pests, providing additional benefits.

The amount of money you will save on your energy bills will depend on the type of property you live in; a large, detached property will generally save significantly more than a flat, due to the amount of walls being insulated and the size of living space. The Energy Saving Trust states that a detached property can save as much as £455 per year on energy bills, whereas a Mid-flooor flat can save up to £125. And as energy bills increase, you can expect to save even more!

Zing Energy are currently helping householders to see if they qualify for free cavity wall insulation via several energy grant schemes. These energy grants can cover the full cost of installation, carried out by our professional cavity wall insulation technicians. Currently the Government-backed Energy Companies Obligation (ECO4) scheme, which runs until 2026, is designed to help low-income households who are in receipt of benefits, gain access to energy saving grants. Contact Zing Energy today and we can help guide you through the qualifying process.

Prior to the installation of cavity wall insulation, Zing Energy will carry out an in-depth property assessment, to check the conditions of the cavities, and to see if your home has any obstructions. If any remedial works are required, including replacing corroded wall ties, removing rubble and installing cavity brushes, our installation teams will make good in preparation for the cavity wall insulation.

Looking for cavity wall insulation grants for pensioners? The ECO4 funding scheme is aimed at low-income households. It doesn’t necessarily apply to all pensioners, as it’s reliant on the energy rating of your property, your income rate, and the benefits you receive. It does apply if you’re in receipt of Pension Credit Guarantee Credit or Pension Credit Saving Credit, or other applicable benefits. You can view a full list of the benefits that meet the criteria on the Ofgem website.
