Solar panel grants made easy

Everyone loves saving on energy bills. And who’d say no to boosting your home’s value and helping the planet too? Given all these upsides, solar panels are a fantastic addition for many homes.

If you’re a homeowner or landlord, you might be aware that there are government schemes for solar panel grants. It’s not so easy, though, to know whether those solar panel grants are available to you, let alone how to apply. What’s more, you’ll want to ensure your solar panels are installed by technicians who really know what they’re doing.

That’s exactly why Zing Energy specialises in a complete service that helps homeowners use government grants for solar panels to improve their homes. Tailoring our advice to your requirements, we handle it all, from surveying the property, helping you complete the application and performing the installation.

What solar panels grants are available?

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme is a significant solar panel grant source, offering support especially to low income households. At Zing Energy, we’re experts in two grant schemes that provide funding for installing solar panels:

  • The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme, which is now in its fourth stage, called ECO4
  • The Home Upgrade Grant scheme

Both of these schemes provide grants for various energy-saving home improvements, including free solar panel systems.

Am I eligible for government grants for solar panels?

The requirements for the ECO4 scheme and the Home Upgrade Grant are different. With Zing Energy at your side, you can navigate them with ease.

Eco Scheme

Eligibility for an ECO4 scheme solar panels grant is simple. There are two aspects:

  1. 1

The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of the property must be E, F or G.

  2. 2

At least one person living in the home must receive benefits within the Help to Heat benefits group.

Help to Heat benefits group, encompasses these benefits:

  • Income based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
  • Income related Employment & Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income Support (IS)
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit (PCGC)
  • Working Tax Credit (WTC)
  • Child Tax Credit (CTC)
  • Universal Credit (UC)
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension Credit Savings Credit (PCSC)
  • Child Benefit (within income caps)

This makes the ECO4 scheme particularly beneficial for low income households seeking to improve their home’s energy efficiency. If you’re uncertain about your eligibility based on benefits, you can take a look at Ofgem’s FAQs about benefits and eligibility – or complete a quick, free application with Zing Energy.

Home Upgrade Grant

The home upgrade grant has different eligibility requirements. One difference is that it’s based on household income rather than benefits received. Some of the criteria are:

  • The property must not be connected to the mains gas grid
  • The income of the household should be under £31,000 gross per year
  • The property must be rated between D and G on its Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)
  • The location of the property must be in a HUG 2 Local authority area (find eligible local authorities on Gov.uk.)

What are EPC ratings?

Each time a property changes hands by being sold or rented, the buyer or renter receives an EPC. The EPC details the energy efficiency rating of the property from A to G, where A is the most efficient and G is the least efficient. The EPC also outlines potential energy costs and how the home’s energy efficiency could be improved. If you’d like to look at your home’s EPC, you can find your EPC online.

Are free solar panels a good idea for your property?

Want to join the renewable revolution and upgrade your home to protect against future energy hikes? Installing solar panels is a key energy efficiency measure that can transform how your home uses and generates electricity. Solar PV is one solution to achieving energy independence, helping you transition into a renewable technology. Zing has a long heritage in solar and we can advise you on the best way to generate electricity and save money.

Perks of solar panels:

  • Energy from Renewables: Solar panels generate clean and renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions and air pollution. Using this form of energy means you’re contributing to a greener, more sustainable future.
  • Increase Property Value: If your home is equipped with a solar panel system, it may be attractive to environmentally conscious homebuyers who see them as a valuable addition and be willing to pay more for your home.
  • Energy Protection: Solar PV systems provide your home with a sustainable energy solution, whereby producing your own energy will not only reduce carbon emissions and lower your energy bills, but also protect you against rising energy costs.
  • Low Maintenance: Solar panels require minimal maintenance. Periodic cleaning to remove dirt and debris is recommended, plus using a solar cleaning contractor once a year to inspect the condition of the solar panels.
  • Lower Energy Bills: Using daylight to generate your own energy is essentially free and eradicates the need to rely on your energy suppliers or supplier electricity tariffs. Plus, you can sell any surplus energy produced back to the grid.

Solar Panels Grants FAQs

Provided your roof is in good condition, you won’t need to replace your existing roof when installing a new solar panel system. However, if your roof is showing signs of damage and its structural integrity is compromised, we suggest installing a new roof before any solar PV works can be carried out. As part of the surveying process at Zing Energy, we will assess the roof condition free of charge.

The majority of our solar PV installations do not require any form of planning application as they are regarded as permitted development. However, in some circumstances it may be necessary to submit a planning application. This is particularly applicable for houses that are ‘listed’, located in conservation areas or are in a part of the country where permitted development rights do not apply. If in doubt, speak to your local authority planning department for advice.

The best way to know whether your roof is suitable for free solar panels is to have our free no-obligation technical survey. However, in general you want your roof to receive sun rather than being constantly in shade. Solar panels can be fitted onto roofs at most angles, although about 30-45° typically works best. Plus, you need sufficient roof space for your solar PV panels.

Solar panels are durable products designed to withstand varying weather conditions. Typically, they will last up to 25+ years, with top of the range models offering an even greater life span. Solar panels also require little to no maintenance, with just a simple clean recommended each year. Providing the panels are installed correctly and are kept in good condition, they should operate efficiently for many years to come.

If you generate surplus electricity, it can be sold back to the national grid, offering financial benefits as well as energy independence. This is all made possible through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme, introduced by the UK Government in 2020. However, due to the current cost of electricity, to maximise this excess energy, you could also consider installing a Solar Battery system, which will store excess electricity energy for later use.

Our services extend beyond solar panels to include a variety of energy efficiency measures. We’re also experienced with cavity wall insulation grants, external wall insulation grants, flat roof insulation grants, loft insulation grants and internal wall insulation grants, among others.

Our goal is to reduce fuel poverty for households across the UK and help homeowners make beneficial energy efficiency improvements.

We help homeowners and landlords with solar panel grant scheme applications and installations across Wales, the Midlands and the South West. If you live within these regions, check if you qualify for funding through the application process now.
